The Legend of Goddess Laxmi and King Bali

But Goddess Laxmi wanted to be with her husband and went to King Bali in a disguise of Brahman women and asked for shelter. During the celebration of Shravan Purnima she tied Rakhi on the wrist of King Bali and revealed him the truth. The King touched by this act promised Goddess Laxmi that he will help her whenever she wants.

Indian History states that the Rajputh Queens use to send Rakhi to Mughal Kings during war and in turn they promised their sisters to protect them.

Yama and Yamuna
Another story states that Yamuna tied rakhi Toyama (Lord of Death). Yama was so touched by this act that he declared whoever gets his hand tied with Rakhi and promise his sister to protect her would be bestowed with immortality.
